Characters:
Jocelyn (Sirion, male dove)
Zilo (Carmen, female canary)
Tessa (Phrixus, male magpie)

- Abandoned Building - Cellar -

Jocelyn hasn't spoken much since Zilo was brought here, not even to her own daemon. It's rough on her, but she's determined to prove... Well, something. Maybe it's that Dryden hasn't really broken her. Probably not, but maybe. More likely, it's just that Tessa is wrong about her. Just because she doesn't see any sense in going out of her way to enrage the violent man doesn't mean she isn't still strong, in some obscure way. The long talks with Sirion have been replaced with long naps, and as evening approaches, she has just woken from one of these. Her eyes flutter open, and she can quickly tell that the only light comes from the windows set high in the room, which means that the violent man isn't here. Once she has realized that, she slowly sits up, still sore from the beating Dryden gave her several days ago.

"Hey, Zilo. Someone's awake," The boy's canary daemon pointed out from her cage. He lifted his head up from where he was laying on the floor. He looked in Tessa's direction for a moment, and then he looked towards Jocelyn. He looked groggy and tired, as if he'd just woken up from a nap. However, after a good yawn and a stretch of the arms, he was wide awake. "Hey there Josey - I thought you were dead or something. You were REALLY asleep," Zilo joked, waving at her. A large toothy grin was on his face.

Jocelyn is not so quick to be cheerful. She looks up in the canary's direction, then to Zilo, then to the door. What happened that she slept through, if he thinks she slept that deeply? She doesn't look back at him before speaking, but there is more than a hint of concern in her voice when she asks, "Did he come again?" She looks in Tessa's direction after asking, but the sleeping woman appears to be all right, and Zilo didn't look in too sorry a state when she looked at him, so... It can't have been that bad, right?

From the sound of her voice, Zilo could easily tell that his cheery attitude wasn't at all contagious. His lips moved back over his teeth and turned into a light, normal smile. "Did who come? The oversensitive brute?" He asked jokingly, hoping it would help cheer her up. "Oh no, he didn't. At least I don't think so. I was out like a candle myself for awhile." He rested his elbows on his knees, leaning forward. "Hey, you don't mind me calling you Josey, do you?" He asked, wanting to make sure that he wasn't offending her.

Jocelyn relaxes a little when Zilo lets her know that the violent man wasn't here again while she was asleep. Of course, that makes it more likely that he might appear sometime yet tonight, but she doesn't like the idea that she could have slept right through him coming, that she might wake up and one of the other two might be gone, and she would have no idea what happened. It didn't concern her too much, right until she slept through his arrival when he brought Zilo. What Zilo says doesn't cheer her up, though. Rather, she says, "You shouldn't speak about him like that. It would make him angry." And who is to say how much he might hear, that he might not try to fool them by leaving the lights off, some day? She doesn't address his question about the shortened version of her name. It's childish, and not the version her family and friends use, but then, thinking about her family and friends wouldn't brighten her mood too much right now, either.

Zilo didn't take her warning seriously at all. In fact, he broke into a small laugh when she said it. He reached up and covered his mouth quickly though, not wanting to awake Tessa. His laughter broke down into small snicker-fits within a few seconds. "Yeah," He said finally in between snickers. "I sort of saw that yesterday." He looked back to her and shrugged a little. He leaned back and supported himself up with his hands. "That's why I'm not saying it to his face. And I'm hoping a mouthy little birdy won't be saying it either." He looked to his daemon, who looked away right when they made eye contact. "Besides, that would just make him more angry at me than you two, so you shouldn't be so concerned, Josey. I can take anything he can bring on," He pounded on his chest with his fist once. ...And then he patted the spot where he hit his chest, coughing a little. "Ow."

Jocelyn frowns at what the boy says. At least Zilo doesn't say that Jocelyn should be happy that Dryden's attention will be focused on him, only tries to convince her not to worry about him... But besides that, there isn't that much difference between what Zilo says and what Tessa said, shortly after she was brought here. The only difference, if there is one at all, is that Zilo actually /is/ trying to be noble. Foolishly noble, but noble all the same. To emphasise that she /does/ think this is all very foolish, she says, still without looking at the boy, "By the time you two finish warring over who is going to anger him more, he will be in a mood to beat one of you half to death, and he'll do it." It's not that she thinks that Zilo will heed her warnings any better than Tessa did, but she has to /try/.

Zilo seems to frown for a little bit himself. Well gee, that was a nice and harsh response that she'd given him. He looked away for a moment, trying to think of a better response. 'You two' must have meant that Tessa agitated Dryden as well - and on purpose. Honestly, Zilo did not mean to agitate him at all. He was just joking and trying to lighten the mood, but apparently it was all just hitting him back in the face. He scratched the back of his head. "...He probably would," He agreed. "But I'd hate to see a lady in pain. And at least it's nice to know that he'd only beat me half to death. Better than being dead, right?" He looked to her, forcing that grin back on his face. "At least it's reassuring to know that he won't kill us - not if he wants that money." He shrugged, laying back down on the ground. "I don't want to make him angry - he just gets angry at me. I don't do it on purpose."

Jocelyn looks to Tessa again. As near as she can tell, the woman is still sleeping. If she were awake, Jocelyn would shut her mouth, but as it is... She looks to Zilo. She can't smile, but she does relax a little more, not quite so upset now. Maybe Zilo /isn't/ like Tessa. "Just do what he says, and don't insult him, okay? He doesn't hit as hard if you just behave." She hasn't gotten to know Zilo at all, really. She wasn't really paying attention when he told his stories, and she doesn't know that his family will pay. She has to assume they will, though, and as long as that's the case, they should really just try to get through this as uninjured as possible, regardless of what Tessa believes.

Zilo looked up from the floor. He noticed that she wasn't as tense. That was enough to bring a genuine smile back to his face. "Well, since I respect the lady's wishes, and I don't exactly like being kicked around myself, alright. I'll try not to insult him anymore." Carmen rolled her eyes and scoffed slightly. "And /we'll/," He looked to his daemon when he said this, "do our best to behave around him. But I can't guarantee that we won't say anything behind his back." He sat back up, looking a little concerned himself. Dryden didn't hit as hard as long as they behaved? That brought a troubling thought to mind. "He didn't hit either one of you, did he?"

Jocelyn begins to smile as Zilo agrees, rather easily, to what she says. The smile fades as quickly as it appears when he asks if either one of them have been hit. She is lucky in that her clothes hide the marks and bruises from her beating, and her hand has healed well, but she can't hide how carefully she moves, those occasional grimaces when she doesn't move carefully enough. All the same, she answers simply with, "We're fine." She doesn't want to upset the boy, inspire him to do something foolish after he just agreed to behave.

Zilo seems to look relieved when she said that they were fine. He took that as a simple 'no'. If he noticed her movements or how she acted, he would have just passed it off as something else. He didn't want to imagine the worst scenario. Thankfully, he didn't notice though. "That's good - because all the grown-ups used to tell me when I was younger that you aren't supposed to hit a lady. You're supposed to be extremely kind and respectful to them, to be a gentleman. And he seems far from a gentleman. But at least he didn't hurt you." He grinned at her. "You shouldn't worry so much though - we won't be stuck here long after all. All that ransom'll be paid up and before you know it, we'll be out of here in no time. As long as we make the best of it, time'll fly." He stretched his arms over his head, yawning again. "The more you worry, the more you stress, the more gray hairs you'll get. Before you know it, you'll be old as..." He quickly checked to make sure Tessa was asleep. "...As one of those scholars. Look, I think Mrs. Pessimistic here has a few of them," He joked, motioning to Tessa with a small snicker.

Jocelyn has been here considerably longer than Tessa and Zilo. It's hard not to stress. She does force a smile as he jokes at Tessa's expense, though. It's not entirely genuine, as Tessa does have a sharp tongue, and the girl looks to her again to make sure she is still sleeping before turning back to respond to Zilo. Ignoring everything else he said, about the ransom being paid and everything else, Jocelyn says, "She /does/ like to worry." Funny, when you consider that she's the richest one, and has the least to worry about, in terms of whether her family will pay.

As soon as he saw that smile, Zilo had to quickly point it out. "Ha! I knew I could make you smile. That made my day. What an accomplishment for today." He grinned at her. He quickly looked to Tessa, also making sure she was sleeping still. He actually was a little more afraid of how Tessa would react to him talking like this - after he was acting so nice and complimenting her the previous day. He thought that Dryden should expect that he was being talked about behind his back - especially if Tessa had already agitated him before. "She needs to look on the brighter side of things. I guess it's hard to when you already live on the bright side," He referred to the fact that Tessa was rich. "But that doesn't mean she can't smile and be happy to at least be alive. That's good enough for me."

Jocelyn is too terrified to talk about Dryden behind his back. At least she 'knows' if Tessa is listening, and it's encouraging that she isn't the only one who thinks the woman may be a little too uptight. The girl's smile keeps as Zilo expresses his reason for being happy, one not entirely dissimilar to her own. "It /could/ always be worse." And she, like he, is thankful that it isn't worse than it is.

Zilo nods, his grin keeping it's place, plastered on his face. "Exactly! There's no use in being grumpy. At least," Now he lowers his voice, deciding that it would be a bad idea of Dryden heard him, "he isn't gong to make us eat garbage. I had to do that once - on a dare. I felt sick for weeks. Couldn't get the taste out for a month." He made a fake gagging noise. "I'd rather starve than eat garbage. I wonder how Mrs. Lamport would like eating garbage compared to sandwiches though." He snickered under his breath. He couldn't even imagine it. He stopped and put a finger over his lips as he talked, as if to 'shh' her. "This conversation we had though - it'll be a secret between you and me, okay? We don't need Mrs. Grumpy here putting down our good moods by pulling apart everything we say. I figure as long as we keep his positive attitude, things'll turn out alright in the end."

For the first time since her last beating, Jocelyn's smile is actually genuine, and, for a little while, she can forget about how dreadful her situation is. She rather likes having this boy here to lighten the mood, even if she does make a face at the idea of eating garbage. She doesn't respond verbally this time, but she does give a nod when Zilo mentions it would be best to keep the conversation between the two of them. That's just common sense.

After watching her for awhile, Zilo could almost tell that her smile was going to stay. He never could tell the difference between a genuine smile and a forced one though. But she seemed happy, so that was at least a good sign for him. He laided back down on the floor and stretched his arms over his head. "The most I'm worried about is how boring it's going to be here - but at least I'm not just stuck with her." He motioned to Tessa - but he didn't even need to since it was obvious anyway. "At least I've got another smiling face around to talk to." He must have finally run out of things to chat about though, because he started humming a small tune to himself.

That's one more way it could be worse for Zilo. For all of them, really, but Jocelyn is the only one who has had to experience it, so far. He could be down here alone. Finally sticking up for Tessa, as Jocelyn is really not the type to pick on /anyone/, the girl says, "Even she is not that bad. A little picky and a little uptight, but at least she's someone. I was down here alone for quite a while before she came." A few days, anyway, which seemed like an eternity. "/That/ was boring." Terrifying, actually, but boring too.

Zilo stops humming for a bit, and he shrugs his shoulders. Jocelyn was making a good point - which reminded him of his manners. He shouldn't have been picking on Tessa in the first place. She didn't really do /anything/ wrong to them, unlike Dryden had. He had to cut her some slack and not be so rude, even if she was asleep. "I guess you're right. Someone's better than no one," He agreed. "I'd die of boredom if I was by myself. I can't stand being by myself. It's always nice to chat with someone else other than your daemon." He obviously preferred other people listening to his voice. Why else did he talk so much? "Well, now you have more people here. So we'll be able to keep you company until we all get out. No need to worry about boredom anymore."

Jocelyn again willfully ignores Zilo's reference to them all getting out of here. It could still happen, even if her hope is waning. Instead, the girl just nods again. Yes. No more need to worry about boredom. And, as she is running out of things to say, she chooses just to stretch, finally. Her movements are still careful, but stretching out her limbs does feel good. And, it reminds her... "The first thing I will do i-... /When/ my father pays, is go for a long walk." Yes. No reason to be pessimistic, to imply that her father might not pay her ransom, when she's speaking.

That was always a nice thing to think about - what to do after you got out. That would give the two of them something to look forward to - and it'd keep their mind off of the possibility of the ransom not being paid. "The first thing I plan on doing," He said, "is buy some chocolatl. A huge bar of chocolatl. I'll somehow find the money to, but I will buy it." He looked at her. "Maybe I can buy you some too. And Mrs. Lamport here - no, she'd want some expensive sweets instead. That's fine with me - more chocolatl for us." He stared up at the ceiling, smiling lightly. "..You know," He started to say, noticing how Jocelyn corrected herself. "...If your pa doesn't pay, I can see if any Gyptians would be willing to help pay your ransom," He offered. He didn't want Jocelyn to be left alone here.

Jocelyn's smile doesn't fade until Zilo mentions trying to get Gyptians to help with her ransom. That wouldn't work, even if any Gyptians would be willing to... And from what very, very little she knows about Gyptians, she doubts it. She shakes her head slightly, and then forces a smile again before she speaks, trying not to look too upset. "If the violent man gives my father enough time, he'll pay it. I know he will. I just... Money is so tight, and..." Jocelyn has to trail off, because tears sting at her eyes and her throat threatens to close up on her. She misses her family so badly, and she's afraid of how long it has been, that the violent man won't be willing to give her father very much more time.

Zilo puts a hand on his chin, thinking about it. That was the bad thing about it - and that was one reason he'd think that the Gyptians wouldn't get their money together in time for his ransom. He figured though that they'd be able to put enough money together, depending on how much the man asked. "Well, then maybe we can ask that man - beg that man, to make my ransom more. It can be your ransom and my ransom put together. Then my family - I mean, the Gyptians..They can pay for you and me at once. And then maybe whenever your father has the money, he could pay us back if he wanted to..." His voice trailed off when he finally noticed that she looked like she was about to cry. He held up his hands, shaking his head. "Please don't cry - I'm sure your father will get the money on time! No problem! I-I was just..suggesting, you know. Just in case. I don't want to leave you alone if our ransoms get paid first..."

Jocelyn can still hear the violent man telling her that she doesn't have much time left, that he isn't willing to keep her much longer, and it's harder to keep from crying once someone notices she's about to cry than if she had just been ignored. She draws her legs back in and up from when she had stretched out, making herself smaller and wrapping her arms around them, ignoring the twinges of stiffness and pain. She has to remain silent for a moment, just collecting herself, and at her distress, the dove daemon flutters in his cage, trying in vain to get out, gnawing at the wire with his beak, wanting to provide some comfort. Finally, though, she says, quietly, "I'm fine. He'll get the money, and I'll be fine." She's really just trying to convince herself, but at least she /isn't/ crying.

Zilo frowned and fidgetted where he sat. He was such a terrible person - he shouldn't have even mentioned it. After cheering her up so much, he put her down by mentioning it. After getting her hopes up, he just smacked them back down. He made her cry - well, she wasn't crying right now, but he could tell she was close to it. He didn't mention the crying anymore though. "You're right, you'll be fine," He agreed with her, trying to help bring her hopes back up. "You'll be fine. Don't worry," He repeated himself, quietly. His shoulders slumped and he glanced away, still feeling guilty about what he said. Trying to get both of their minds off of it, he started whistling a small tune. His canary daemon joined in with a small song of her own.

Despite the fact that Jocelyn appears to be calming down, Sirion still struggles, fruitlessly, to free himself. It is only after she has sat there for a while, repeating that she'll be fine to herself, quietly, that she seems to notice her own daemon's distress, and whatever she was trying to prove seems inconsequential. She stands, a little too quickly, causing her to wince, in order to reach her left hand's fingers into the cage, to stroke at his feathers as well as she can and attempt to comfort him, and herself.

The silent bundle of expensive silk which has been the sleeping Tessa finally stirs, perhaps awoken by the singing or the other daemon's agitation. Or maybe simply because she's been asleep for awhile now and the floor is not so comfortable. She mutters something in French before her eyelids flutter open, and there's that fleeting moment of hopefulness that always comes upon waking, that this has all been some horrible nightmare. Her expression fades, falling before it's quickly fixed back into that bland neutrality, and the woman pushes herself up into a sitting position, not speaking immediately as she works on waking up.

The canary's singing stopped, and so did Zilo's whistling. He looked to his daemon, who had her attention on Tessa already. Carmen opened her beak ready to say something, but she was interrupted by Zilo quickly whistling to her. She looked down to Zilo, who quietly moved his finger to his lips, telling her to hush. She closed her beak again. He sat up, forcing a smile back on his face. He still felt terrible on the inside - especially since it seemed that Jocelyn's dove daemon was probably acting up as a result of what he first said. But he didn't need to let that show. He didn't want to bring anyone else's hopes down, and he wanted to seem like the cheeriest of the three. "Morning Madam Lamport~!" He greeted with a toothy grin. He acted as if the conversation between him and Jocelyn never happened. "Or afternoon - I honestly can't tell. How was your slumber?"

Jocelyn hears Zilo greet Tessa, but she keeps her attention on her daemon for the time being. The two of them don't speak, as they would normally, but Sirion nibbles on her fingers a little bit, and she spents a lot of time stroking his head, and it's almost as good as even the most optimistic of conversations at soothing them both. Not so much at convincing them that everything will be okay, but at least at making them believe that things are tolerable, for now.

Tessa glances over at Jocelyn, her eyes still a little bleary, before she looks back at Zilo and inclines her head at his greeting. "Uncomfortable," she replies simply, because nothing here is ever actually good. Then again, she's sleeping on a floor, so she no doubt figures she has some right to complain. "What has happened?" she asks with some suspicion, her gaze cutting back over to Jocelyn and the slowly soothed daemon there. Of course, her assumption is that Dryden is in some way to blame, and she's a little paranoid as to what she's slept through.

When Tessa asks what has happened, Zilo quickly looked towards Jocelyn. He didn't want to exactly admit to him putting down Jocelyn's mood, and he didn't want to talk about the offer he gave her. And he had a feeling Jocelyn didn't really want to talk about that either, or talk about why she was so upset. Zilo's smile faltered for a second as he tried to think of an excuse, but he kept it on his face when he brought his attention back to Tessa. "Nothing bad, don't worry," He quickly told her, to help brush away any suspicions she might have had. "Me and Josey here were just talking - we were telling each other what we'd do when we got out of here." He motioned to Jocelyn. "Josey said she'd want to take a long walk. I'd just like a bar of chocolatl and I'd be happy. What about you, Mrs. Lamport?" He quickly asked this part, hoping it would steer the conversation away from what just happened.

The violent man /is/ in some way to blame. He's certainly who Jocelyn would blame, at any rate, for all of her less than ideal moods recently. She's sure, though, that Tessa will think this is just her being weak again, so she really has no desire to speak about it. As such, she is more than happy to let Zilo do all of the talking.

"I will go to the salon," Tessa replies, seeming successfully diverted, though she does give Jocelyn one last suspicious look. Fine, let them have their secrets. "And then, perhaps, shopping. Followed by a sleep in a proper bed. And then I will find someone and pay him money to come and kill this man." So she really has a full day planned. It's all spoken in the same matter-of-fact tone too. She gives a demure stretch and then pulls herself stiffly to her feet.

Zilo frowns slightly when he hears the last part of Tessa's plan. All of that sounded nice, and much expected, from someone like Tessa. Well, except for the killing part. He should have expected that - but he hated thinking of terrible things like that. "Kill him? You're kidding right. I mean, why would that..pig...be worth any of your time, ma'am?" He asked. "Besides, I'm sure he'll get what's coming to him in time - might as well not stress yourself about getting him killed, especially when you're back in your wonderous home." He looked slightly uncomfortable, disturbed even, but his daemon was especially fidgetting and fluttering her feathers about it. That terrible man had to have a reason behind all he did - he didn't DESERVE to die.

Jocelyn looks at Tessa, a little startled. Not quite so much as Zilo, perhaps, but some. She wouldn't be upset is Dryden died, but to kill him, or even just to hire someone to kill him? It's definitely not the type of thing Jocelyn would do, even if it were within her means. She finally finishes stroking her daemon's feathers, leaving them in the cage just so that he can nip playfully at them a few more times, before turning away, still listening to the other two.

Tessa looks between the two as they give her those startled looks, and she gives a weary sigh. Are they really so simple? And now she has upset them again. "Oui, of course. I speak only out of anger," she replies, not really trying too hard to make her tone convincing. No, Dryden will pay if she has her way, no matter the trouble involved. No one treats Contessa de la Mater Lamport like this and gets away with it. "Is it really only a walk and chocolatl that you would like? Surely there must be more out there you are dreaming of." See? She's /trying/ to be nice. If she doesn't sound horribly interested, well, she can only do so much; she's not a saint here.

She was only speaking out of anger. Zilo calmed down a little, smiling at this. His daemon calmed down a little too, and tried to pass off all her fidgetting as cleaning her feathers. Since Zilo didn't know Tessa for very long, he didn't expect her to actually do it. He just thought she was just angry and getting her feelings out - it was like other Gyptian children wearing to kill one another when they were having their mudball fights. It wasn't anything serious in his eyes. He shrugged his shoulders. "Well, I don't know myself. Chocolatl seems good enough for me," He said, content. "I mean, it's nothing big, but it seems more likely than anything else." He hugged his knees to his chest and rested his chin on his knees. "...A nice bed or clothes'd be nice. Maybe a bath." Speaking of which, he moved to sniff under his arm. He made a face. It was a good thing he was somewhat away from the ladies then.

Jocelyn doubts that Tessa was kidding. She is willing to let it drop, though. And though a bath and lying in a real bed would be nice, her first choice of things to do... "I will be really glad to see my family again." Her brothers, her sister, her mother, and her father... This time, the thought doesn't upset her as much, but she tries not to focus on it all the same, tries to put it out of her head as she sits again, back against the cages.

"Oui, this level of hygiene is unacceptable," Tessa agrees, frowning a little and quickly averting her gaze as Zilo gives himself a sniff. And so Jocelyn is treated to Tessa's attention. She nods, though her expression remains just a little too blank: she won't be happy to see her own family? At least not enough for it to be a driving reason for wanting out of here. "Yes, I am sure that will be nice. They will be tres heureux to see you as well," she bids charitably, though again not with a whole lot of emotion.

Zilo looks towards Jocelyn as she talks about how she'd want to see her family again. Why hadn't Zilo thought of that? He felt a little guilty for that being not one of the first things he thought of - but he was only in here for a day. It hadn't been enough time to really miss the other Gyptians. Jocelyn had obviously been here much longer than him and Tessa - no wonder she'd miss her family. "Oh yeah, me too," He agrees with a small nod. "Ha, it'd be great to tell this sort of story to the Gyptian kids though. I'll brag about how I was snatched up by some monster man and lived through it with two pretty ladies." He grinned to himself, liking the idea of other little Gyptian boys being jealous of his little 'dangerous adventure'. "I'm sure anyone who hears about what happened to us will think the three of us were the bravest!" He liked the idea of himself considered 'brave' among his 'peers'. It brought up his already inflated ego.

Jocelyn takes a deep breath once she's sitting. She affords Zilo a slight smile, then says, to both of them, "I need to lie down." She has not been awake much longer than Tessa, but what happened moments before Tessa woke wore on her physically and mentally. Better that she tries to sleep some more than stay awake and try to stay in this conversation. She waits for them to respond before lying down, though, just being polite.

"Brave, yes," Tessa replies dryly, recalling the boy's earlier tales of supposed bravery. Well, at least this is, in her book, closer to the mark than stealing a bear's armour on a dare. She says nothing of seeing her own family, just gives another nod that Zilo is looking forward to seeing his too. Jocelyn gets a curious look, an eyebrow arched in her direction, but Tessa nods again, as though giving her permission. She seems to be falling out of interest with the conversation, beginning to draw again in the dirt beside her.

Zilo looks to Jocelyn quickly. He almost frowns, but he quickly catches himself before he does so. He had a feeling he knew why that she wanted to go to sleep, but he wouldn't argue against it. Honestly, he'd rather talk to Jocelyn than Tessa, but he wouldn't force her to stay in the conversation if she didn't want to. "Alright then. Nighty night - if you fall asleep - then, Josey!" He told her with a wave before she laid down. He stretched his arms and laid down himself. He looked to his daemon now. "Hey Carm, if we're going to tell this story to the Gyptian kids, we got to exaggerate it more with details." Carmen snickered, "Maybe we should put emphasis on how /ugly/ the snatcher is," She joked. And their little conversation went on about putting various details in their little story - at least thus far.

Jocelyn gives a nod to the boy, than lies down, resting her head on her arm. She closes her eyes, but she's not likely to fall asleep immediately. Rather, she just spends some time listening to the boy talk to his daemon, something that actually serves to chear her up some as she lies there.
